Repotting Water Garden Plants

Planting bare root Hardy Lilies

Materials Needed

        1.     1 gallon plastic container

        2.     Water Garden Soil or heavy clay soil

        3.     Fertilizer

        4.     Gravel Topping

        5.     Newspaper if pot has holes

Line container with newspaper if necessary, add soil to approximately ¾ full, soil should be moderately packed, add tuber ad shown with cut end near edge of pot at a 45 degree angle. Add more soil but never cover the crown(growing tip). Add fertilizer per manufacturers directions. Add about 1” of gravel, remembering to not cover crow. Carefully lower into the water.

What to expect... after repotting the plant will likely have some dying leaves, but new ones will appear. Once the plant is established in its new container it will begin to produce flowers (usually 2-4 weeks).

Tropical lilies are potted the same, however there is not a horizontal growing  tuber. Plant Tropicals in the middle of the pot.

All lilies prefer still water and should be fertilized monthly during the

growing season.

Consider a Thermoplanter, which is a heated container which will produce much larger plants, much faster and is great for wintering tropical lilies in the pond.
